Not sure if you can do text only, ask. But I do believe the contract states voice service somewhere being required.
As for going for the cheapest voice option.. This will resign/restart your contract over again.. If you only have 6 months, 1 year I would wait it out. tmobile customer service is about the best in the industry, talk to them they will help if they can.
Worse case kill you home phone and go only mobile if need be and grab a home phone with blue tooth for bonding to your cell so you not stuck with ear pieces, etc
Good luck, cell contracts should be criminal but then again so should most of our politicians.
