The ipod touch is exactly the same as the iphone without the phone or camera or a bunch of other features. It also has less battary life. The iphone is hard to text on if you have thicker fingers or aren't too coordinated (like me). If you get the ipod touch, typing will be just as hard because they are exactly the same, just the touch has less features.

Well the biggest difference between and iPhone and an iPod touch is that the iPhone is a phone, iPod, and internet browser while the iPod touch is just and iPod and internet browser. The iPod touch is also a little bit thinner too. Texting is something you get used to on it. Even if you get an iPod touch you have to get used to doing some typing on it for internet browsing and using youtube, etc. So you have to decide if you want a phone, which you also have to pay a service fee for, or just an iPod.

I don't recommend getting an iPhone. I've heard they are extremely hard to text on, and if you want to browse the internet, you have to be on a WiFi network or the internet is really slow. The main difference between them are: one is a phone, iPod, and web browser (iPhone) and the other doesn't have the phone capabilities (iPod Touch).I would keep the cell phone and get an iPod . If you really want a new cell phone that's easy to text with, I would go for the LG enV by Verizon Wireless or their new cell phone coming out soon, the LG Voyager. The Voyager has a touch screen in the front, if that's what you are looking for. And it has a full keyboard. Hope I helped you =]
