WOW. I am a parent, but I was once a teen. I remember those days clearly and I didn't have a cell phone. Think this way. A blackberry is not a phone, but a PDA. It is a hand-held computer. It gives you access to much more than just the normal numbers to call someone. If you feel that your 13 year old is responsible enough to deal with that kind of freedom to not send a million texts, or to log too many hours of mobile ****, or to not download any cool application that charges to the account, then do it. However, if you just want your child to be able to send the occasional text with restrictions, and to call you when he needs to, then don't. Its just not necessary for kids to have something so extravagant until they are mature enough to care for it properly. In addition, you have to pay extra above a normal cell phone plan for the blackberry. They have a special plan you pay for.
Hope this helps....
