I have my new Blackberry. It's doing its first charge, thing is, when the phone is off on my old phone you used to still get a little charging icon on the screen. This one, all thats happening is the light at the top is flashing on and off. Is this normal?? Bit of a silly question, but I want it fully charged before I start playing around with it....so in this mode, is it charging?

yeah the indicator should be flashing to let you know that its charging once its done it'll stop & it'll be green.
