i want to buy a smartphone. if the smart phone has gps enabled, can i just use it like a handheld gps or do i need to get service from the provider (sprint) to enable gps?

If you've never had a smart phone, you'll be kicking yourself for getting one without a good dataplan.So with a good dataplan, you'll be able to use the GPS exactly how you want to, but it really does depend on the phone and the software it's running.
