Hannibal. During the 2nd Punic war he led a large army, including elephants, across Europe, over the Alps into Northern Italy where he remained for 15 years.

The Romans finally drove him back to Carthage [North Africa] where he was finally defeated in 201 BC. Hannibal had a pretty interesting career after that as a politician, general and military adviser. He was always hostile to Rome and committed suicide to avoid being extradited to Italy in 182 BC.
