I take all my wma sound files windows media audio files, and use itunes to import them into itunes from my music folder for instance Joe Satriani Flying in a blue Dream, the preferences can be set in itunes to convert wma files into itunes into various forms in particular mp3 and when that happens you can use itunes to download your music into your ipod.

There are at least 2 levels of quality of mp3 in itunes, use the best quality although this will use slightly more disc space, but the sound quality will be better. If you play TheSims2 you can place copies of your mp3 formatted music in thesims2 music to listen to while you play thesims2.

As far as video is concerned I have not tried to convert a windows media video file into mpeg 3 or mpeg 4 format yet. Not sure how.
