There are several reasons why American car manufactures use parts sourced from a Foreign manufacture.Chrysler had an agreement with Mitsubishi. Chrysler needed small fuel efficient cars. Mitsu needed a way to avoid import taxes. Part of the agreement was Diamond Star Motors joint designing, sharing parts and shared platform cars. That brought along the shared designed DSM cars, rebodied Stealth/3000GT and Avenger based off 2gen eclipse.Chrysler also used the Mitsu SOHC 3.0 because they didn't have a small motor to match the 2.2/2.5 Turbo or 2.6 N/A motors used in the Minivans. Chrysler started using the 3.0 in 1987 and ended in around 97. The 3.0 later trickled down to the cars because people were tired of problems related to the turbo motors. Problems like turbo lag and no low end torque. The need of a solid V6 arose from the problems Chrysler had during the bankruptcy and a deal made with the government. The motors used in the neons are/were completely designed by Chrysler. Mitsu was under contract to use Chrysler motors in their cars.

The same reason you see the triple star in the ignition system of almost every Japanese manufacturers car, Hyundai's used mitsu engines and electronics also. Mitsubishi is a major manufacturer of automobile, and industrial components industry wide.

Chrysler was partners with Mitsubishi in auto making up to around the mid middle of 2000. Then they split and went with Daimler of Germany and stayed with them for several years. Being partnered with Chrysler let Mitsubishi get a foot hold in the American market and now not only does it have dealers all over the country, but manufactures vehicles here as well.

Chrysler has been dealing with mitsubishi since the 80's and at one time, during the 90's ..Daimler Benz....the Dodge Stealth/Mitsubishi 3000GT, Dodge Viper, Chrysler 300C, Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse, and several other top notch vehicles came from these unions..it also gave these Japanese and European based companies a solid foothold on American soil..access to factories and dealerships...they also learned how to market cars to Americans....Chrysler had a relationship with Maserati...a short lived one during the late 80's..that produced the Maserati TC..which was basically a rebadged Chrysler Lebaron.
