It sounds to me like the coolant temperature sensor is bad. The sensor usually sends a signal to the Engine Control Module to let it know when to turn the fans on. On a lot of later model vehicles, the temperature gauge itself receives a signal from the ECM from the same sensor. I would look into a bad sensor or the wiring to the sensor first and then go from there. Also look to find out how many coolant temperature sensors the vehicle has. Several older model fuel injected vehicles had 3 sensors. One for the gauge, one for the fans, and one for the Computer. Most of the later models have one and on occasion 2. If it only has one I would be lean strongly towards a problem related to that sensor. Hope that helps and God Bless!!
