At 4, how about giving him a book, or a Leap Frog game.

I would go with a wii. I got one for my parents (believe it or not) for when they have the grandkids over - age range 2 to 11. Best thing ever. The kids love it, and so do my parents who are both in their 70's and had never touched a computer game in their lives before. Most of the basic games are simple enough that people of all ages can enjoy them, and play them together

As an educator, i would say go for the Vtech or some similar games that involve kinesthetic movement and cognition. it has a whole series of learning games and some with interchangeable discs. You can buy the Wii when he's a little older. Anyway most games like the Wii or GameCube keep getting improved on so you might as well wait for the improved or latest version.

The Wii Is pretty cool. Especially when you play the bowling and tennis games with the kids. I play with mine. My daughter doesn't have the V-tech but she has a hand held leapster and she loves it but she would rather play the Wii with the family. The Wii will keep him active if yal play the tennis and bowling. You get off your butt to play. The other stuff you pretty much sit there. Just make sure what ever YOU decide that you play with him every day and never miss a moment.
