My mitsubishi pickup has a knock in the engine. Any ideas what it could be?

The sound speeds up when I rev the accelerator. Our mechanic thinks it's a rod bearing. The thing gets 28 miles to the gallon, so I don't want to give up on it yet, but I can't afford to take it to the shop.
