Have Audiovox walkie talkie. Charged. How do I get them to transmit?

Batteries are charged. I have read the manuel. Bought off auction site. We've tried everything to get them to transmit. They are audiovox gmrs6000. They come on...can change channels...I know it sounds crazy but they seem to work fine except we can't hear each other. And yes we do have the volume turned up. They show "busy". I'm at a loss. Thank you.

I actually work in an electronics store and we had the same problem with other audiovox walkie talkies. Alot of them were defective and we sent them back to the manufacturer. My best bet would be to call audiovox.
