Default I am looking into buying a Mitsubishi Eclipse.... it has always been my

dream car. 2nd gen Vs 3rd gen? I want to buy a Mitsubishi Eclipse... i am all into the looks of the car... I have always liked the 2nd gen... but have heard TOO many times that the tranny goes out on them at about 100-120k miles... i am absolutely horrible with engines and what not... so i want one that will be reliable but also has some power to it... I was thinking the 3rd gen might be more reliable just because i havent heard much about them breaking down all the time... is this true? i want a turbo (mainly for the blow off valve... that sound to me is amazing.. lol) but it seems like the turbo eclipses break down ALL the time... and im not engine smart at all... so i heard i can go with the non turbo and put a small turbo under 8psi.. i guess the engine can handle that no problem... or i can just go with a v6 3rd gen eclipse and maybe put a turbo on that... i personally like the looks of the 2nd gen way better... but they can both look good... any opinions? i just dont want my car breaking down all the time and needing to be takin to the shop... and the dreaded tranny breaking on the 2nd gens...

thanks in advance

2nd gen all the way!!!

the stock 420a non-turbo is a really reliable engine. i own 2 eclipse, a gst and a rs. i use the rs non-turbo to commute and it handles really well. the engine lasted me up to 280,xxx miles. to me thats good, so instead of selling it i just swapped in a new engine

the trany never broke down on me, i just replaced it when i replaced the engine. but yea, if you want more power go with the 2nd gen gst. . . my gst has 125,xxx miles and i havent had any problems with it. runs like a champ and eats hondas all day

2nd gen! I've owned 3 of them and, yes, they take some love and work, but they are a FAR better car all around than the turd gen ones. I had a 96 GST Spyder and I pulled a 15.02 with just a good exhaust and 124k on the ticker before my rebuild. That 4g63 motor is so strong and well built- ask any DSM guy- after 99 they forgot what the car was supposed to be and made the 3rd gen for the masses.
