It's because the ball is supposed to be controlled with the fingers. I think your friend is exaggerating to make a point about the role fingers play in ball control. Sure, the fingers are in charge. But that doesn't mean it's wrong for your palms to contact the ball.

The movement of your hands is like the athletic movement of feet. Flat feet tend to be less athletic, and a person who uses their whole hand, rather than their fingertips (in any sport) is not thinking athletically.
