How do i sync my treo 600 with my computer?

i have an apple 10.x and have already downloaded palm desktop what next. do i need a sync cable/cradle or can i do it with the IR. and i have downloaded a bunch of applications and games from a website on the internet what format do they have to be in in order for me to put them on my treo. and how do i do that in the first place
