Unfortunately, the history of birthstones is a bit fuzzy. The first culture to celebrate birthdays in a modern sense were the Mithras from Persia. The custom slowly spread from Persia to the Roman Empire and all its various domains. The tradition never died out, even after Rome did. Under the Mithras custom, it was traditional to give a gift to the person having a birthday, often times jewelry was given. It is believed that each month was assigned a stone sometime during during the 1100s in Cadiz (Moorish Spain) as the Moors were great fans of gems of various kinds and they also used a solar calendar which can account for the 12 stones, a list of which you can find below.January - GarnetFebruary - AmethystMarch - AquamarineApril - DiamondMay - EmeraldJune - Pearl / AlexandriteJuly - RubyAugust - PeroditeSeptember - SapphireOctober - Tourmalaine and OpanNovember - Topaz and CitrineDecember - Tanzanite, Zircon, and Turquoise
