I am not sure I understand your question. Garnet is found in a matrix, that is, surrounded by another type of rock.Garnets are used for jewelry, if gem quality, or for abrasives and sandpapers.

Specimens for collectors and museums, if it is used as jewelry or industrial purposes, the matrix is removed. Having the matrix with the specimen shows the types of rock/minerals that will occur with garnet.
