Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (YAG, Y_3Al_5O_12) is a type of garnet (x_3y_2[SiO_4]_3). It's structure is similar, except that the Si atoms have been replaced by Al. It is also close in structure to corundum (Al_2O_3), with 3 in 8 Al atoms replaced with Y.YAG's space group is Ia-3d, which is the same as Ga_4Ni_3. The link below shows a Ga_4Ni_3 structure. Even though the space groups are the same, the chemical formula aren't even close. In terms of atomic positions, it's more like the Al_2O_3. Basically, it's planes of oxygen atoms with Al and Y between each layer.I would love to give you some actual images, but almost every reference I have to the YAG structure (and every picture too) isn't freely available.
