Default I just bought a panasonic viera th-50pz80u and i am thinking of getting it...

...professionally calibrated ? does the calibration make a noticeable difference in picture quality

If you have $250 spare dollars, go ahead, it will look better. But most people won't notice. I would just rent or buy a calibration disk. Now this isn't the same as having a professional do it but its pretty good for a $5 rental fee. Please read the attached link for tons more info. Note: You can usually find out answers to questions by typing them into Google.

The calibration sets up the optimal setting for the current viewing envirioment.

For example, if this set is in your living room mounted in the center of the wall, and the set is calibrated at noon on a sunny day, the set will have the best viewing at noon on similar day. Any light in a room will change how the picutre is viewed. Professional Calibration is best for those who have a home theater setup without any exteranl light present in the room.

You can change between the setting with the Aspect/Format button on remote for preset settings.
