Yes the PS3 can read normal and self burned dvd movies as other dvd players. Sometimes on old TVs, it will play in black and white. On HD TVs , it can also upscale it to 1080p.

Yep, if you have it plugged upto a HDTV using a HDMI lead it can upscale it to 1080p too.

go to Settings - Video Settings(Blu-Ray/DVD settings on old update) and the upscaling options are in there, fiddle with them till you find one that suits your screen resolution and hte movies your watching.
