I have a 50ft. XLR extension for my boom mic that I use with my

Panasonic DVX...Lots of static...? This extension was fine when last used, hasn't gotten wet to my knowledge, but suddenly crackles with constant static. There's not much to clean but I have and it didn't help. Is this extension a goner? And what are some of the not so obvious conditions that might have caused this so I can avoid this happening in the future. It's only been used on 1 feature movie. I plugged mic directly into camera and got no static so I know its the extension.
