I've been looking to buy the Panasonic DMCFX500 and have read very impressive reviews. I was looking for a camera that could handle outside shots and landscapes which panasonic is said to excel in. Furthermore, it appears that the additional memory sticks and batteries, which are almost a must-buy for most compact cameras, are significantly cheaper for the Panasonic.
Sony cameras, typically the cyber-shots are said to be better at enhancing colour, however tend to be somewhat noisy from my experience, by this I mean the image tends to be somewhat pixilated. There is no denying that the Sony cameras however look impressive but expect batteries and memery cards to cost more.
At the end of the day, most digital cameras perform the same basic task, so consider what else may need to be purchased along side the unit. I personally lean towards the panasonic's, however Sony's image quality might have the slightest (and I mean slightest) upper edge on image sharpness and quality.
All the best
Cheers
