IF they are not good brand, what is a better brand of DVD-r?

Yes, I've used many different brands of DVD's and they're all equally good in my opinion. However, I would recommend only using DVD+R, as they are compatible with more DVD players.

No! why do you think you can buy 100 packs for $30. They are alright for things you don't care about, but for archival purposes or video dont use them, you will just end up with a bunch of coasters. Use Verbatim, Fuji Film, Sony or TDK. These are 1st and 2nd class media, memorex can be 3rd or 4th. Also check for AZO dye on the disc, it will say this somewhere on the package. I know Verbatim uses it and it is the most reliable form of dye for burning. Also burn your discs at half of what the max speed of the disc is. (say 24x then burn at 12x.
