how do i connect my labtop (dell ins.1520 vista) to my tv (philips)?

i have the correct plug to connect, but i dont know how to change my computer setting so that it connects to the tv. can anyone help? Thanks

For Dell Laptops:Push and hold the FN key aka the Function Key.Push F8 at the top of your laptop.Keep holding the FN key.You should see three options come up if it is properly connected to the TV and set to the correct setting.Push F8 until you get to the option that shows a laptop and a tv.Let go of both keys.Your computer should turn off for a second, don't freak out.You should now see your desktop on your TV.
