my philips stereo won't play my mp3 player- no audio is appearing when i...

...connect up the mp3 to the stereo? I have a Philips Micro System MCM 119 - there is a USB port were you can connect your mp3 player (i have connected my ipod creative zen) when you connect up the mp3 players, a message appears on the stereo screen saying reading, than no audio appears. Is there any way i can fix this?
