I turned it on this morning and for some reason it won't get past a black screen with a flickering white cursor bar thing in the top-left hand corner of the screen. I'm guessing there's some kind of system recovery function without having to boot, but I don't know how to use it. I don't have any instructions for it, so can anyone tell me how to access the system recovery function?

For a real answer to that question we'd need more information. For example does the computer makes it through the POST properly. Meaning does information flicker across the screen for a while before you get the blank? If so knowing your operating system would help as well.































If the information goes across just fine but the operating system doesn't load many of them have recovery tools built into the installation CD that may do the trick, otherwise a reformat may be necessary. If no information scrolls across at all your screen then you'll want to have it checked. Taking apart laptops may be fun but it fubars your warranty.
