why is this so? my samsung e840, why i cant charge it while it is power on?

i bought a Samsung E840 phone recently. But every time i want to charge its battery, i have to turn off the phone 1st, else it won't charge... why is this so? why i can't charge it while it's power on? is the phone broken? or it's same for all phone of this model?

It should. Try bringing it back to the shop asap to be replaced by a new one
