Sounds like it is the cervix thinning. I would call your Dr though just to be sure. Better safe than sorry! Any excruciating pain you should call your doctor. Or anything out of the ordinary.

I think I got something like that the other day and it scared me cause I thought it was labor, it was a sharp pain on the sides of my stomach and wrapped around to my back, it would hurt really bad as well when I moved. I just drank water and went back to bed and it went away...thank God...I'm 36 weeks as well and was scared he would be too early. Just drink some water and rest, it could be baby in a weird position hitting nerves. If it doesn't subside in an hour or so...call the doc or go to labor and delivery...

I get them sometimes too (and I'm also 36 weeks). More often than not, it's from the baby shifting around. When you get to the point where there's no more room, the baby's movements can press on all kinds of organs and nerves, and it can be really painful. Just this morning I was walking down the hallway and I almost fell to my knees, it hurt so bad. Sometimes laying down on my side helps. If these pains are able to be timed (like they're ten minutes apart, for example) they might be contractions, although they usually aren't sharp pains; they usually resemble bad menstrual cramps. Good luck to you!

I did that with my second and third pregnancies. It was due to things stretching out and getting ready down there. The pain was so bad sometimes, all I could do for relief was to lay in a hot bath. Good luck!

There's a multitude of reasons the pain could be occurring. Some are harmless and others need to be checked out by your OB. Definitely call and talk to the doc or the advice nurse. Call now while they're still open!
