The Union used the Sharps in all it's models in combat but did not issue all they purchased. This was because it was feared that given a repeater the troops would waste ammo. The Confederate used what ever they captured but were never able to produce the metallic cartridges recommended for the firearm because of manufacturing priorities so did not carry the weapon as a matter of course.

primarily the north as stated above, some history on the most famous unit to use it .the berdan sharpshooters was origanally 1 regiment expanded to 2 later in the war.hiram berdan was one of the best marksman in america and rich.he thought that a unit equiped with the latest rifles would be a huge help so he offered to pay for the entire regiments outfitting .EVERY man in order to qualify had to put 10 rounds in 1inch spread from 100 yards!they were also the first units equiped with green uniforms to blend in to the shrubry, they had rubber buttons so as not to gleam, and they were deployed on the wings in skimsh formation, they dominated any battlefield they occupied.today we know any 'good shot' as a SHARPSHOOTER

I think it was the north that used this rifle. The south might have had a few I really don't have enough info.
