I can set it up with messenger to work as a webcam but it goes to standby after about 5 mins.The camcorder doesn't appear to have an option to turn off the auto stanby function and the only way to use the webcam continuously without disruption is to put a tape in and record myself while using it, which I dont want to do because I'll end up with hours o f useless footage of my face looking slightly off camera.Does anyone know how to stop my camera going to standby without a tape recordingORCan anyone tell me how to make a dummy looped tape that would work continuously in the camcorder?

My camcorder used to do the same thing. Sometimes you can get a code to override the settings, but I doubt you'll be lucky in this case.You're better off buying a webcam - they're not that expensive.
