how to use a german siemens 35, formally vodaphone connected mobile in UK ? ( have

uk virgin and orange chip ) got a siemens 35 from german friends. they were with vodaphone and gave it to us without a card. we have the exact same mobile here in the uk with us . it is with virgin. putting in this card, will not let us use it, not even an emergency call. has anybody ever used a foreign mobile in the uk ?
