can i password protect the HARD DRIVE of an Amilo-Pro Fujitsu-siemens laptop?

while setting password in the bios of the above-mentioned laptop, the computer asks for a separate password for the Hard Drive too, i want to know if the HD will be usable or recoverable in any way when the operating system changed orused on another computer when stolen !
