Email sent to Verizon.net email address unreachable too long?

Email I send to a friend with an email with verizon.net, about a month or so ago, began to come back with me with a failure notices due to "unreachable for too long". it doesn't happen with every email I send to her but frequently enough to cause major concern. probably happens at least once a week. anyone else having this problem sending to verizon email addresses? thanks
