I cant answer the whole question but i can give you some insight. Verizon doesn't use SIM cards. They use what they call an ESN, or an electronic serial number. If you get a family plan, with 4 phone numbers, you shouldn't have to but all 4 phones at that time. If i remember right, i added a line to my plan, but didnt buy a phone instore, and i just called them afterwards to get my old phone hooked up to the new line for my grandmother. If you call verizon, you can have then switch the ESN linked to that phone number, which will basically assign the phone number to that phone.I have 3 lines on my family plan with unlimited text and 700 minutes, and i pay 102.98 after tax. (Granted no one goes over).FYI, if the phone has a SIM card, it's most likley 99.999% not compatable with verizon.
